小型加速器駆動中性子照射装置とジャイロトロン装置からそれぞれ生成される中性子とテラヘルツ光を同時、併用した新しい癌治療法における量子ビーム融合化先進癌治療装置の概念についてそのフィージビリティスタディを行った。現在開発中の小型中性子照射装置並びにジャイロトン装置の設計データをもとにCADによる照射シミュレーションを行い、新しい癌治療法、すなわち量子ビーム融合化先進癌治療装置としての適合性並びに今後の開発課題について検討を行い、まとめた。

A One-dimensional propagation of shock wave supported by atmospheric millimeter-wave plasma

A shock wave supported by an atmospheric breakdown plasma caused by a high-power millimeter-wave beam was studied. The shadow graph image in a shock tube visualized the one-dimensional shock-wave generated by the millimeter-wave breakdown in atmosphere for the first time. It was revealed that a normal shock wave propagated through the tube at the constant velocity while it was detached from the ionization front of the plasma whenever the propagation velocity of the ionization front was supersonic or subsonic. And it was visually clarified that the atmospheric millimeter-wave breakdown had the combined structure of the normal shock wave and the heating region of the millimeter-wave plasma. The measured pressure of the shock front was as equal as the normal shock which propagated at measured Mach number.

Reliability test of the 170GHz gyrotron for ITER

Using the ITER relevant 170 GHz gyrotron, the repetitive operation with long pulse and high power is conducted. The first consecutive days repetitive operation with ITER equivalent condition (800 kW/600 s with 20 min interval) is successfully performed in JAEA gyrotron test stand in order to obtain a basic data of the reliability of the current gyrotron system. The 72 shots out of 88 shots were successfully continued until the end of the pulse (600 s). The successful rate was 82%. The results demonstrate the feasibility of gyrotron operating at a high reliability for high power long pulse operation for ITER like conditions.

Measurement of RF transmission mode in ITER relevant EC H&CD transmission line

In this report, the preliminary results of the mode measurement in the ITER relevant 40 m distance transmission test line composed from 63.5 mm corrugated waveguides and miter bends are presented. The field patterns were measured by taking temperature profiles on a paper screen placed in front of the waveguide end using an infrared imaging camera. The complex electric field at the waveguide end was retrieved from the measured temperature profiles. As a result, the transmission power included 87% of HE$$_{11}$$ mode and 6% of LP$$_{11}$$ odd (HE$$_{21}$$+TE$$_{01}$$) mode and small ratios of other modes and the mode content ratio had small dependence on length of the transmission line. This was because LP$$_{11}$$ mode which was generated at the initial coupling propagated through the transmission line. Hence the initial coupling of gyrotron beam into the transmission line is important to improve mode purity.
